Case File: Area 51
Date: March 1989
Description: Area 51 is a secretive military base located in the Nevada Desert several hundred miles northwest of Las Vegas near the White Sands Missile Range.
History: Area 51 is located at the center of UFO research and legends of extra-terrestrial folklore. It is located six hundred miles west of Roswell, New Mexico, where the infamous Roswell UFO crashed in 1947, and some believe that the UFO that crashed there may have been sent to Area 51. It is not seen on any map, and even though it can be seen from a ridge by the naked eye, the military claims that it does not exist. It has apparently been there since the 1960s, and it is site where advanced military aircraft have been tested there at night. Bob Lazar claimed that he had worked at a site near Area 51, and that he had worked with UFOs and that the government has them hidden. Bob claims that in March of 1989, he witnessed the test flight of a UFO by the government. Some believe that Bob is a fraud, while others are certain that he is genuine, and that there are other witnesses who claimed to have seen the UFOs as well. When Unsolved Mysteries asked the government about Area 51, they denied that the base existed. Bob believes that the secrecy is not just hiding alien spacecraft but also the bodies of aliens.
Investigations: None. No trespassing is allowed near the site. UFO enthusiasts once camped out and observed the base from a far, but the military has since acquired this property to deter long range observations. The area is frequented by patrols.
Extra Notes: The case was featured as a part of the September 18, 1994 episode.
Results: Unresolved. The U.S. Government eventually acknowledged the existence of Area 51 on April 18, 2000 as a place of intense government research. However, what is actually being done at the site remains unknown.
