Details: Three-year-old Carlos Alvarez is the son of Yolanda Aguilar and Carlos Alvarez Vasquez. When Yolanda was fifteen, she married Vasquez as a part of a family agreement. His family had rights to any offspring, while her family received $7,000. When Vasquez died in 1984, his family took Carlos from Miami, Florida to Texas and then to Alhambra, California. Yolanda tracked them down and was allowed to see Carlos periodically until she abducted him. His uncle, Jorge Alvarez Vasquez, and his grandfather, Ricardo Alvarez Fuentes, initially told police that his babysitter, "Eneida Cruz-Rivera", had abducted him and taken his birth certificate and passport. Investigators soon discovered that he had actually been taken by Yolanda; Jorge and Ricardo were charged with filing a false report. Yolanda was not charged with any crime.
On February 3, 1988, Carlos and Yolanda were walking along a street in Downey, California, when they were forced into a rented U-Haul truck. The truck, which had been rented earlier in the day in East Los Angeles, was found abandoned minutes later about a mile away. Yolanda was found locked in the back of it, unharmed. However, Carlos and his abductors were nowhere to be found. It is believed that his father's family was involved in the abduction. Two of his abductors have since been identified as his uncle, Jose Alvarez, and Jose's friend, Juan Cristo.
Carlos's father's family has been known to live in Mexico, Bolivia, and Venezuela. It is possible that he was taken to one of these countries.
Suspects: Jose Alvarez and Juan Cristo
Extra Notes: This case first aired as a part of a missing persons special alert on the October 25, 1989 episode.
Results: Unsolved. As of a December 1993 article, Carlos remains missing. However, there are no missing person websites that have Carlos profiled on them, so it is possible that he has since been found.
