Her death was witnessed by several members of her family and his family in their neighborhood while celebrating Independence Day 1953.
Phillips was originally arrested in her death, but was released a day later because her death was ruled accidental by the police.
In December 2, 1958, then 15-year old-Phillips ran away from home, leaving a note saying he has regrets about Lauren's death every day and the fact that it torments him knowing he killed a little girl. The note then went on saying how he is going to make up for her death by doing good to others around others all around the world. Thousands of volunteers, the police, and the FBI attempted to locate Phillips but to no avail. He has not been seen since 1961 when he was donating food to a homeless shelter.
