Case File: Miracle the White Buffalo
Location: Janesville, Wisconsin
Date: August 20, 1994
Description: Miracle is a rare non-albino white buffalo.
History: On the morning of August 20, 1994, an extremely rare white, non-albino buffalo calf was born on the Heider farm in Janesville, Wisconsin, which they named "Miracle". To the Lakota Sioux nation, "Miracle" was an ancient prophecy that has come true. Almost overnight, the Heider farm became a religious shrine that has hundreds of people come from all over the world.
The legend behind the white buffalo is that over 600 years ago, a woman came to several Native American children working in a field, and told them that she was a buffalo. She said that she would return in 600 years as another white buffalo, and would bring world peace. The woman then turned into a white buffalo and vanished. Now, the Sioux nation believes that "Miracle" will fulfill the prophecy, and has already fulfilled one part of the prophecy, changing to different colors. Another part of the prophecy involves five years of natural and man-made disasters, such as fire, flood, earthquakes, typhoons, pollution, and war.
Background: Dave and Valerie Heider own the farm where Miracle was born. They have been breeding buffalo since 1989.
Extra Notes: The case was featured as a part of the December 8, 1995 episode.
Results: Unresolved. "Miracle" the white buffalo died in 2004, but two other white buffalos would be born on the farm, one in 1996, and the other in 2006. The most recent one was named "Miracle, Second Chance".
