Details: The Sagebrush Rebellion is a group of ranchers, loggers, and miners opposed to Federal control of public lands. Originally, ranchers, loggers, and miners had permits that gave them free access to these lands. However, due to conflicts and loss of resources, the U.S. Forest Service has had to restrict private use of these lands. On March 31, 1995, in Carson City, Nevada, unknown individuals (presumably members of the rebellion) bombed the office of U.S. Forest Service District Ranger Guy Pence. At first, the FBI assumed that the bombers were targeting the building and not any particular employee. Guy Pence did not believe that; he believes that he was the specific target. Guy believes that the members of the rebellion have targeted him because he has been one of the main enforcers of the federal laws on the public lands.
Four months later, any question about whether Guy was personally being targeted was put to rest. On August 4, 1995, Guy and his youngest daughter were away, while his wife Linda and two older daughters were at home. While watching a movie, their daughter Margaret heard someone outside of the home. However, when Linda went outside, she noticed nothing unusual. Linda and Margaret then went into their kitchen when an explosion rocked the house. The living room windows broke open and the house was damaged. Fortunately, no one was hurt. The Pences discovered that a homemade bomb had been placed underneath their van, which was destroyed.
The FBI determined that the bombs were very similar in structure and were most likely created by the same individual. The FBI notes that the bomb was not an intricate device, but a simple bomb. Since the attacks, Guy and his family have moved to a new location. They hope that the bombers can still be identified. A $30,000 reward is being offered.
