Details: Two unknown Latin men dubbed the "Shopping Bag Bandits" are wanted in a series of Los Angeles bank robberies in which they placed money into shopping bags they brought. They are believed to have robbed at least seven banks. One suspect is light-complected, 5'11", weighing 195 pounds. The other suspect is dark-complected, 5'7", weighing 140 pounds.
Extra Notes: The case was featured as a part of the November 2, 1988 episode, part of a "bank robber roll call" along with Chevy Chase Bandit, John William Farr, and Shotgun Bandit. It was later updated on the November 23, 1988 episode.
Results: Captured. Lloyd Gates, one of the robbers, was persuaded by friends to turn himself in shortly after the segment aired. He surrendered on November 7, 1988. On November 22, the other robber, Andrew Verdugo, was arrested by police. Both were charged and convicted of armed robbery. According to online information, Andrew Verdugo died in 2014 and Lloyd Gates was released from prison in 2005.
