Case: Amnesia
Location: Burlington, Iowa
Date: May 1994
Case[]
Details: Tony Marabella started playing baseball in 1989 when he was just sixteen. By May of 1994, he was a minor league baseball player whose career had stalled out. One day during batting practice, he suffered a terrible headache and collapsed on the field. He was immediately taken to the hospital.
Later that day, Tony woke up at the hospital but could not understand what was happening. He claimed to have developed amnesia afterwards, forgetting he was a ballplayer, his girlfriend Isabel, his family, and even his own name. Several tests could not determine what caused his memory loss or headaches. His doctors suggested that he may have suffered from stress-induced amnesia. He tried to hide most of his memory loss from others, including his teammates.
However, one day while in the locker rooms, he was talking with some of his teammates about previous games. Talking about the games helped to bring some of his memories back. Soon,
he claimed, that his amnesia improved his play; the segment suggested that it could cause him to make the major leagues. At the time the segment was filmed, he was playing the best ball of his career. Tony stated that he believes that his amnesia is helping him get farther in his career.
Extra Notes: This case first aired on the April 12, 1996 episode.
Results: Solved. Although the cause of Tony's amnesia remains a mystery, the effect on his play, if any, was temporary at best. He never made it to the major leagues, topping out with 89 mediocre at-bats at the AA level. In fact, by the time the case aired, he had already been released by the Expos. Three years later, he retired from baseball.
Tony's brother Mario later became involved in mafia-related activities. In 2008, he was kidnapped from a gas station; he has never been found. It is not known if Tony was involved in any of the activities that his brother was involved in.
